Bridges

Solutions for Engineering - Bridges
Leica Geosystems is a pioneer in bridge construction - our instruments have been used in significant projects including the Oresund Link (Sweden/Denmark), Millau Viaduct (France) and the largest arc bridge in the world - the LuPu Bridge (China).
Bridge world record - Millau
(Reporter 49, Dec 2003) The highway bridge currently being constructed over the Tarn River in Southern France will be 19 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower. At the time of publication of this Reporter issue, the highest of a total of seven bridge piers will have reached a height of 244m – merely 70% of its full height of 343m together with its steel pylon. The deck of this world’s tallest bridge, which is under construction one hundred kilometers north of Montpellier, will span the Tarn River valley at a height of 270m. more
World Record Arch Bridge
Now in the final stages of construction, the Shanghai Lu Pu Suspension Bridge, will soon become the “No.1 Arch Bridge in the World”. The central 550 meter-long steel arch, which spans the new 3,900 meter-long bridge over the Huang Pu River, is 32 meters longer than the current world record holder — the 518 meter-long New River Gorge Bridge, West Virginia, United States. To place the steel arch elements with the highest accuracy, the most precise surveying methods required the use of an automated laser Total Station Leica TCA2003. more
Old Suspension Pipeline
“The scanned image allowed us to create an accurate as-built of the pipeline bridge for a minimal cost. The new process greatly enhanced the inspection results while reducing the risks associated with physical surveying of the structure.” Larry Catalano, Principal, Farnsworth Group more
Colorado DOT Project
“I cannot imagine anybody doing 22 bridges and associated topo in 40 days- that’s roughly 2 days per bridge — without using Cyrax — and without any inconvenience to the daily traffic. The challenge in the office was to take the massive amount of data from the scanner and strip out the necessary information. We’ve been able to use the Cyclone software to speed up that process.” Tom Service, PLS, VP, David Evans Associates more
PennDOT Bridge
“What we have been seeing is that Cyrax can gather thousands of points in one day which would take us weeks using traditional methods,” says the Chief of the Photogrammetry and Survey Division of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Bradley Foltz. Mr. Foltz is the author of the article, "3D Laser Scanner Provides Benefits for PennDOT Bridge and Rockface Surveys," which appears in the May 2000 issue of Professional Surveyor magazine. more
Build a New Landmark
The “Big Dig” in Boston is the single largest, most complex and technologically challenging highway construction project ever undertaken in the United States. more
Overpass construction
"A feasibility study of the Cyrax laser scanning technology was conducted to assess its capabilities for construction site inspection work for the California Department of Transportation." A case study was made on this study and is available for download. To download simply click on the PDF icon: more
Tsing Ma bridge - Hong Kong
Record-breaking Tsing Ma Bridge. more
Øresund Bridge - Denmark
The major civil engineering project currently being undertaken in the northern part of Europe is the construction of a road and rail link to cross ÿresund, the narrow sea passage between Denmark and Sweden. more
Yang-Pu bridge - Shanghai
With a span of 620m, Yang-Pu bridge is not only one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, but also one of the busiest. Stability and reliability of such a bridge is very important, and regular checks are necessary to provide the highest security. Surveying technology has evolved during the last few years to introduce new systems to improve the accuracy of measurements and greatly reduce the time needed to perform such tasks. By using automated Leica total stations, able to find the targets automatically, combined with deformation measurement software, results can be viewed directly on site. more
Akashi Strait suspension
A network of precise GPS reference stations, supplied by Leica Geosystems, has been installed on the world’s longest suspension bridge in Japan to monitor movements of the bridge’s structure in real-time, with millimetre-level accuracy. more
Moving a railway bridge
A Leica TCA 1800 automatic target recognizing precision total station, controlled by the Leica APS Win Software, was in use when a bridge was moved by 23 metres below the Inter City Express main rail axis Mannheim-Frankfurt. This work on the Mannheim- Blumenau railway line was carried out by the Mannheim office of Bilfinger + Berger Bauaktiengesellschaft. The surveyor responsible for the measured control of the undertaking H. P. Echsle, describes this operation for our readers. more
Deformation monitoring
Measure inaccessible points sequentially with a high degree of repeatabilty with the Leica TCA2003 Automated total station. more
