Solutions for Mining & Exploration
Mining and quarrying covers the range of activities involved in the extraction of a natural resource. Involves the making, recording and calculation of mine surveying measurements, to provide the basis for the planning and control of mine operations.
Diamond Mine enlists javelin
(Reporter 51, August 2004) Argyle Diamond Mine, the largest single producer of diamonds in the world, have purchased five Javelin Dual Grade lasers from Leica Geosystems for grading applications in their open cut mines. more
Building strengths in mine-production technology
(Reporter 51, August 2004) It is nearly a year since Leica Geosystems joined forces with Australian mine-production technology company, Tritronics (Australia) Pty Ltd. The acquisition reinforced the commitment by Leica Geosystems to leverage its current mining segment product offering and strengthen its overall portfolio with complimentary solutions for production monitoring, machine automation and site management for mining and construction. more
Underground mining in South Africa
The Leica on-board mining software for TPS300/TPS400 increases the efficiency of underground survey work. The system saves a lot of time, simplifies the survey process and enhances security of operation. more
Intelligent Dozer
(Reporter 48, Jan 2003) Moving earth is a fact of life in mining and construction – a painstaking and time-consuming task. Leica Geosystems, in partnership with Tritronics (Australia) Pty Ltd and assisted by their Australian Distributor, C.R. Kennedy & Company Pty Ltd, however, have developed just the solution – the Leica DOZER 2000T. Without even stepping out of the office, the mining engineer and surveyor have direct radio contact with the machine operator who is working with the bulldozer. Digital Terrain Models (DTM) are relayed directly to the machine, guiding and verifying earth grading by real time GPS and completing this task more efficiently, in less time, and with considerable savings across the entire project. more
Steering by satellite
You are a dozer operator working on a land reclamation site. On top of your vehicle is an antenna receiving signals from orbiting satellites that measure your position in three dimensions within centimeters. In front of you is a large computer screen that shows a picture of your machine as it moves across the site and displays exact cut and fill values to match a precomputed design surface. more
Volume measurements
The LEICA DISTO can be permanently mounted for continuos observation. more
GPS Machine Guidance
The Falkirk Mining Company has been a pioneer in the use of GPS technology for machine guidance in land reclamation and mining applications. The company has been using Leica’s Dozer 2000 GPS machine guidance system at its lignite surface mine in North Dakota since 1998, resulting in substantial productivity improvements and cost savings. more
Surveying on a low level
Surveying on a low level, 850 metres underground. more
Open pit mining
"P&M Coal currently uses labor intensive methods to calculate the volume of coal and material that is mined from its open pit coal mine in Kemmerer, Wyoming. In the current method, a surveyor walks along the top and bottom of the mine wall to collet 3D points." The case study goes on to compare traditional pit mining surveying with 3D laser scanning, listing all of the benefits of this new technology in open pit mining. more
North American Coal
Global Positioning System (GPS) Machine Guidance is satellite based system utilizing a dualfrequency Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS receiver, specialized software to compare calculated position against a pre-set digital Terrain Models (DTMs), correction radio and a rugged, touch-screen computer display. In laymen term’s, an engineered plan and a computer is used to guide an equipment operator in placement or moving of earth, much like a speedometer tells you your speed in your automobile. more
Texan brown coal mining
(Reporter 45, Sept 2000) Thanks to a new GPS-based machine guidance system supplied by Leica Geosystems, The North American Coal Corporation has achieved significant savings in annual operating costs at its San Miguel Lignite Mine in South Texas. more
Dozer 2000 Gets Even Better
DOZER 2000 gets even better – with New Productivity Tools, Data Transfer and More Applications. more
Blackwater Coal Mine
(Construction Insight, Vol 1 Issue 4, 2003) The BMA Blackwater Coal Mine in Queensland, Australia, recently concluded successful field trials of an innovative system integrating GPS based machine control and direct radio data link between the home office and the earthmoving machines on the minesite. more
