Building the Canal of the 21st Century

Mighty Mo's Last Journey
When the USS Missouri was decommissioned on March 31st, 1992, the 887-foot-long Iowaclass battleship looked tired. Her worn and pitted teak deck had supported thousands of naval officers and their crews. The 1998 transfer of “Mighty Mo” to the nonprofit USS Missouri Memorial Association of Honolulu, Hawaii, spawned a new career for the historic battleship as a World War II museum next to the USS Arizona on Pearl Harbor’s Battleship Row. But the directors had an even bigger vision in mind – one that involved repairing and preserving the battleship for generations to come. more
Big Ship, Tight Space
With a clearance of about 226 feet (69 m) between Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) and the span underside of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, there’s usually plenty of room for the world’s biggest ships to pass through on their way to the Port of Oakland. But when one of those ships is loaded with three of the world’s tallest container cranes, maybe there’s not enough room … or maybe there is. Searching for Bombs Under Water
An estimated 7,000 bombs were dropped on Dresden during the Second World War. While most of them brought death and destruction, many still lie underground or in the Elbe river – without having detonated – and continue to pose a danger to construction projects even today, some 65 years later. Matthäi used the state-of-the-art Leica RedLine series satellitebased machine control system to search for undetonated Second World War bombs on and around the site for the new Waldschlösschen bridge over the Elbe. more

“Chantiers de l'Atlantique” has started to use Leica 3D measuring systems in 1995. Due to the good performance of the Leica products they have increased the number of measuring systems considerably. All the users at the “Chantiers de l'Atlantique” highlight the savings the Leica systems have allowed them to make in terms of time and money. With the purchase of twoTDA 5000 systems (chosen because of the ATR) and associated software, they expect further productivity improvements in overlength management, which is a crucial problem for all shipyards and the main key to cut production costs.
