At each milestone of our Leica Innovation Process, improvements to the products are discussed, tested and - if economically and technologically feasible - implemented. Examples of sustainable product design - controlling and reducing the size and weight of our instruments, which reduces the use of materials such as metals and plastics
- where possible we use recyclable materials (e.g. aluminum and brass)
- use screw or lock mechanisms instead of glue to allow easy dismantling of products
- products are easily upgraded with additional parts, devices and software
- increased compatibility with other instruments and broadened functionality
- ergonomic products that are easier to use
Legal Compliance of our Products
We want to be proactive and prepared for any possible regulatory changes. Wherever financially possible and beneficial to the product and customer, we exceed the legal requirements.
EC Directives 2002/96/EC (WEEE) and 2002/95/EC (RoHS)
As it is the objective of the WEEE-Directive, Leica Geosystems reduces the waste produced through its products at the end of their life cycles. Materials/parts are chosen which can be reused, recycled or at least recovered.
As required by the directive, information on the waste treatment of the products will be available in a recycling passport. The parts/materials are listed which can be reused, recycled or have to be disposed of, confirming the required rates of recovery and recycling.
The selling units in each country will inform their customers where the products can be brought to for recycling/waste treatment.
The RoHS-Directive prohibits the use of certain hazardous materials in electrical and electronic equipment. Most of Leica Geosystems products don't fall under the scope of the directive yet. Based on our environmental strategy, we reduce the use of hazardous materials by redesigning all our products - to fulfil the directive as soon as possible.
Universal Surveying System
Leica Geosystems launched the world's first universal surveying system, which enables the combine use of both terrestrial and satellite-based sensors. It guarantees seamless data transfer between GPS and TPS instruments, and enables the instruments to be operated with uniform software, identical controls and a common database. With the Leica System 1200, we have made a giant step towards increasing productivity in surveying.
