Tsing Ma bridge - Hong Kong

Real-Time Kinematic Spans the Gap
Record-breaking Tsing Ma Bridge.
The world's longest road on the air is well-monitored by Leica Surveying Systems.

The clear span of the 2.2km long Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong is 1377m, 100m longer than San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Officially opened in 27th April 1997, the Tsing Ma will rate an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest suspension bridge for both rail and road traffic.

Like the Kap Shui Mun Bridge, it has six lanes for motor traffic on top. Below these and inside giant steel element, there are two rail tracks and two more lanes for emergency use by motor vehicles. These two protected roads are especially important for typhoon time, ensuring uninterrupted traffic to Chek Lap Kok Airport, in which Leica systems have also played a key role.

Throughout the construction and subsequent monitoring work, the consultants and contractors have made extensive use of the Leica solutions, like the TCA1100 & 1800 Automated total stations, NA3003 Digital Level, Laser Plummets, etc. Among those, the Leica T2002 electronic theodolite with the DI2002 distancer has played the most critical role to ensure the highest accuracy attained for the control  beacons which safely anchored in rock on mountains to form the most precise control network.
