"I don’t think it's even possible to do a project like this using traditional methods, but if it be done I believe it would take 30 to 40 times longer to create a 3D model with similar coverage and accuracy as the laser scanned model we created." "The use of laser scanning and the associated 3D modeling tools on this offshore modification project saved us significant time and direct costs. Such techniques for this type of work are becoming a standard procedure." Bart Neighbors, PE, PMP - Project Leader ConocoPhillips Alaska Capital Projects more

“HDS and Cyra's software tools provided an easy way to accurately identify differences between actual construction and our design model of this complex, exacting facility. Using these tools, the client successfully avoided significant field-related construction conflicts that would otherwise have led to schedule extensions and additional project costs."

“We’ve since used this workflow — or variants of it — on over a half dozen projects and gotten great results. Essentially zero rework. It’s proven to be a really economical and versatile way to take advantage of the completeness and accuracy of Cyrax scanning for a wide range of 2D or 3D retrofit projects.”

"Carving as-built plans with a Laser Cannon," and "RE&C pinpoints success with Laser System at Detroit Edison," are two articles from the winter and spring of 2000 that cover Raytheon's use of 3D laser scanning on Detroit Edison's Monroe Power Plant in Michigan. "Carving as-built plans with a Laser Cannon," was published in the January 2000 issue of Microstation Manager and "RE&C pinpoints success with Laser System at Detroit Edison," was published in the March/April issue of The Rec&Cord. Cyra Technologies (now Leica Geosystems HDS) also put together a case study on the project. more

“We also used Cyrax on a trial program to model remote, off-plot pipeways in order to determine if the technology could help us in our effort to provide refinery isometrics for inspection purposes. We were able to determine that using laser imaging did get us to a final product quicker than conventional means. We are also convinced that this method will continue to get quicker with additional experience. Another feature is that we determined this method to be significantly safer (no more climbing around in pipeways in remote, isolated areas).”

“This old plant, which we acquired in 1991 and subsequently added new process piping to, had only outdated documentation. When we undertook the UV testing of pipes to comply with OSHA 1910, we needed precise and reliable as-builts of the piping in order to establish repeatable measuring points for future retesting. With Cyrax we accomplished this goal faster and safer than we would have using manual walkdowns as the alternative.”

“We needed a footprint design for replacing and rerouting the two lines, but with Cyrax we got actually much more - we got a “rat’s eye view” of the “snake-pit”, the entire pit of complex piping. The 3D model is useful for detecting possible interferences with existing piping + support that the piping may encounter.”

“This project was extremely challenging for our first one due to the complexity of the site. Along with the Cyrax 2500 we used a Leica TPS 1105 total station to accurately measure targets and features used to tie scans to the site grid. The final results not only impressed our client, BP, with the level of detail supplied but also confirmed our company’s belief in the future of the Cyrax and Cyclone technology for numerous “as-built” surveys.”
