Laser Scanning for Everyday Survey Work
"Laser Scanning for Everday Survey Work," first appeared in The American Surveyor • January/February 2005 issue. The article covers Metco Services of Detroit, Michigan's experiences with 3D laser scanning. In particular, the article touches on a successful as-built project that took place in Kennedy Square. This project was documented in The American Surveyor article and in a case study for Leica Geosystems HDS. Both the article and case study are available for download on this page. Leggi tutto
Battling West Nile Virus with Remote Sensing
(Reporter 51, August 2004) Who hasn’t been bitten by pesky mosquitoes while outside enjoying a nice day? However, what if, as a result of mosquito bites, you experienced symptoms such as nausea or fever, or even worse, paralysis or death? That certainly changes this from a normal everyday to anything but! When the West Nile Virus (WNV) found its way to North America in 1999 via mosquitoes, the public became concerned about the suddenly-harmful consequences a mosquito bite may carry. In the five years since its arrival, nearly every state has reported the presence of the virus. In California, the Monterey County Health Department took proactive steps to address the threat of West Nile to its community. Leggi tutto
Improved cellular coverage
(Reporter 50, Apr 2004) Telefonica Celular, one of the largest mobile telephone companies in Brazil, contracted IMAGEM, a GIS solutions company, to help them build a GIS database in order to plan and improve their cellular network. The goal was to simulate the actual cellular network coverage of Telefonica Celular in Rio de Janeiro. Leggi tutto
Private GPS reference network
Leica Geosystems recently delivered the new system GPS1200 to SSAB in Oxelösund, Sweden. Leica GPS1200 constitutes the core of a new investment to make a private GPS-reference network at SSAB. The GPS antenna has been located in a carefully chosen place - on top of the 73 metre-tall tower in the power plant. Leggi tutto
Leica Geosystems in the universe of mobile telephony
(Reporter 49, Dec 2003) A new partnership between Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) and Leica Geosystems Italia means that a national GPS network now exists throughout Italy, able to support professional GPS users with precision positioning for various applications and in numerous market segments. As well as providing a DGPS differential correction over a mobile telephone network, TIM's network is used to optimise the use of its antennas and is able to monitor the network for radio frequency leakages, supporting scientific documentation regarding the extent and disposition radio frequency electromagnetic fields – an important issue with health and environmental implications. Leggi tutto
Ordnance Survey use GPS in map revision
(Reporter 49, Dec 2003) A massive 42% in productivity gains has been measured by Great Britain’s national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey, following the implementation of Leica GPS surveying systems to undertake their most detailed mapping. GPS was introduced to the field from January 2002 and allowed all Ordnance Survey surveyors to update map data on the spot. Leggi tutto
Mobile phone signal
No mobile phone signal dead spots thanks to ERDAS remote sensing and image processing software. Leggi tutto
Radio link
In the last thirty years, there have been enormous advances in performing topographic survey. The Surveyor’s field work has evolved from being totally manual – setting up baselines, running direct levels and pulling tapes, and plotting locations by hand – to the introduction of compact electronic total stations and computers. Leggi tutto

Swisscom tower at Säntis
On top of the Säntis mountain, at a height of 2500 metres, there is at present the highest construction site in Eastern Switzerland. A new multipurpose installation for Swisscom and for the Säntis cable railway is being constructed. Surveying operations are being performed under difficult conditions by the Schällibaum engineering company, using the first remote-controlled Leica total station to be sold in Switzerland. Leggi tutto
